Tuchel Criticizes Wembley Crowd Support Despite Dominant Wales Victory.
Thomas Tuchel expressed his regret that the England team did not enjoy greater backing from the home fans during their decisive 3-0 friendly victory on Thursday night.
Tuchel was happy to see his squad continue their good form, with goals from Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, and Bukayo Saka inside the first 20 minutes effectively ending the contest. However, he was not content with the atmosphere at the national stadium.
“With one and a half training days to prepare against a organized team and we performed excellently,” Tuchel remarked. “We could have been 5-0 up at half-time. We couldn’t score the additional goals. It was quiet. We didn’t get any energy from the crowd. Our team gave their all to win.”
“How much more can you give in 20 minutes? We prevented them escape. If you hear just the Welsh supporters for half an hour, it’s disappointing because the team earned better encouragement today.”
“I support this statement. There’s nothing more than leading 3-0 in a derby. I would have wished for a greater backing in moments where it becomes tough.”
“In the second half, to cheer us on, there was excessive backing for the opposition. It might have aided us to regain energy, but that’s football and that is it.”
Squad Decisions Vindicated by Performance
Away from risking a fight with fans, the manager also raised eyebrows by omitting Bellingham and Foden from his team selection. But the decision was backed up by Morgan Rogers delivering another standout performance in the attacking midfield role and getting his first international goal.
“He is what he is,” Tuchel explained. “He is a No 10 and he is fighting for his place.”
Bellamy Seeks Improvement from Defeat
The Wales manager expressed hope that his team, who host a strong Belgian side in a key qualifying match on next week, take lessons from their poor first-half display.
“That’s the reason I scheduled this friendly,” Bellamy stated. “I need to see where we are. What are our ambitions? Who do we want to be? Today gives me drive.”
Fitness Worry for Watkins
Ollie Watkins was substituted at half-time after hitting a post and may miss out when England face their next opponents in Riga in a qualifier on Tuesday.
