The Traitors Circle: An Engrossing Tale of Resistance in Germany

On the 10th of September, 1943, an informal circle of well-connected acquaintances gathered in a small apartment in Charlottenberg district. The host was Elisabeth von Thadden, and the nominal reason for the meeting was her younger sister’s 50th birthday. However, the event was merely a facade for several key individuals convening to consider the future course now that the reality was that Hitler was losing World War II.

Resistance and Realization

Kiep, an ex-diplomat, talked hopefully about how Mussolini’s recent toppling indicated Italy’s willingness to negotiate peace with the Allied forces. Meanwhile, Hanna Solf excitedly imagined Hitler’s downfall: “He’ll face a firing squad.” The hostess, a devout Protestant and one-time educator of a top-tier institution, cautioned about the impending disaster that was sure to follow the end of hostilities. To the attendees on that late summer’s day for tea and cake and a dismal confection known as “war cake,” the nation’s renewal into a democratic nation state felt so near that it felt tangible.

The Shift in Loyalty

None of these people were natural rebels. Many belonged to esteemed martial backgrounds who had been burned by the loss of the first world war and the ensuing disgrace of the treaty of Versailles. Among these loyal Germans, the national socialists’ promise to restore Germany’s military pride, not to mention financial security, was tempting at first. The restoration to the enduring values of cultural icons was expected to follow.

That idealism was short-lived. When the grim reality of the regime’s agenda for racial cleansing emerged, they found it untenable to stand by. Back in 1933, Kiep, at the time a diplomat abroad, endangered his position to pay tribute to the famous physicist, the most prominent exile opposed to Hitler. It earned him an immediate recall back home. For Von Thadden, the moment of reckoning occurred when she saw the regime’s plan aimed for the church – a Nazi-aligned doctrine in which Hitler outranked Jesus Christ. In the case of the Countess, the duty was helping hundreds of “submarines” – fugitives – endure harsh winters, before pointing them toward safety via a network of tunnels and fake identities. She excelled at subtle defiance: in all her movements, she ensured to carry a bag of weighty items with both hands – it allowed her for omitting the required Nazi greeting.

Betrayal and Consequences

What no one realised until the trap was sprung was that a betrayer had infiltrated among them. The agent appeared during the gathering with excellent references, but looking back, suspicions arose concerning the newcomer. He paid close attention to all statements as though compiling a report and attempted to elicit information regarding future actions. This occurred since he documented everything and presenting it to his superior in the secret police, the notoriously ruthless the officer. In less than two years, nearly everyone who had been present that day would be killed or incarcerated.

Twists of Fate

Through a series of gripping episodes, all closing with tension, the account details the twists and turns by which these courageous figures sought to evade and finally accept their fate. Initially a tense calm prevailed, but then came an official visit or a physical apprehension. Given that these were noteworthy captives with names or fortunes linked to Germany’s prewar elite, it was inevitable that they’d be used as political tools. There were show trials, featuring expensive barristers and relatives begging for mercy. It didn’t do any good. Otto met his end on the gallows, Elisabeth was decapitated. Arthur Zarden, a mandarin at the German ministry of finance, managed to break away from his guards and take his own life, as for the others received lengthy terms.

A Page-Turner with a Powerful Message

Readers will find a rare achievement – a fact-based narrative that reads as propulsively as an airport thriller. Yet this is also a deeply thoughtful examination, posing an uncomfortable question: How many of us would find the courage to act defiantly, protest openly and confront the grim outcomes?
