Courageous Rail Staff Member Suffers Critical Injuries Amid Multiple Stabbing Incident on High-Speed Train

A courageous railway employee who intervened to save passengers during a mass stabbing incident on a high-speed train has sustained life-threatening wounds, police stated on Sunday.

Details of the Terrifying Event

Surveillance footage reportedly shows the employee trying to halt the assailant as the train journeyed between Peterborough and Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire. Bystanders recounted a terrifying 14-minute duration after the train departed Peterborough, with injured passengers running through carriages.

The individual, a 32-year-old citizen from Peterborough, remains in detention for questioning. Police declared a major event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.

Emergency Response and Aftermath

The event on Saturday night resulted in 11 people being treated in hospital after the train made an unplanned stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Several individuals have since been released from medical care.

A witness filmed the individual waving a large knife and being shot with a Taser as he faced police on the platform. He was reportedly heard yelling, "End my life, end my life."

“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. Our sympathies go out to the injured and their loved ones – particularly the courageous employee of train personnel whose relatives are being supported by trained officers,” said a high-ranking law enforcement officer.

Union Reaction and Appeals for Action

Rail unions were swift to praise staff and call for more measures. One union leader said he would be “seeking urgent discussions with authorities, train companies and law enforcement to ensure that we have the strongest available support, tools and effective protocols in place”.

Another association leader urged the train operator and authorities “to act quickly to review safety, to help the affected workers, and to make sure that no incident like this happens again”.

Operator Praised for Rapid Thinking

The train driver who stopped the service at Huntingdon was described as being “deeply affected” but “well”, and has been praised by union representatives for doing “exactly the right thing”.

“The driver didn’t halt the train in the center of two stations where it’s clearly difficult for the first responders to access, but he carried on traveling until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the assistance was almost already there,” explained a association official.

Further Information

Police stated they got the first distress reports at 7:39 pm, and the service was compelled to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.

An witness recounted at first thinking if the situation was a holiday joke, but soon realized from people's faces that it was real.

Police have confirmed there is nothing to suggest the event was a terror-related incident and have asked the community to provide with any further information.

Train services on the impacted route are anticipated to have delays until Monday, with passengers advised to postpone their journeys where feasible.

Individuals with details that could assist the investigation are asked to reach police by texting a designated number with a case code.
